From 16 to 19 June 2026, Dr Stavros-Evdokimos Pantazopoulos, member of the SustaINLaw research team, participated in the Fourth International Conference on Environmental Peacebuilding, organized by the Environmental Peacebuilding Association (EnPAx) and the University of Ottawa in Ottawa, Canada.

Dr Pantazopoulos contributed to two sessions of the Conference. He first participated in the panel “Environmental Peacebuilding in Context: Law, Knowledge, and Interdisciplinary Approaches,” which brought together experts to reflect on the role of law and interdisciplinary knowledge in the development of environmental peacebuilding. Later that day, as part of the EnPAx Law Interest Group panel “Law for Environmental Peacebuilding,” he presented the paper “Accountability for Wartime Environmental Damage in Ukraine,” co-authored with Dr Nataliia Hendel of the Institute of Information, Security and Law of the National Academy of Legal Sciences of Ukraine.

The presentation and discussions addressed legal approaches to environmental harm associated with armed conflict, including questions of accountability for wartime environmental damage. These issues are closely connected to the SustaINLaw research strand on modern military operations, particularly its examination of how international law can contribute to addressing the environmental consequences of contemporary warfare and to the achievement of relevant Sustainable Development Goals.

Participation in the Conference also provided an opportunity to exchange views with an international and interdisciplinary community working at the intersection of environment, conflict, peace, and international law, as well as to disseminate and further develop research undertaken within the framework of SustaINLaw.
